Design Narrative
The renovation objective of the Hyatt Centric Fisherman's Wharf was two-fold: bring this 1989 original space up to date with current guest expectations of amenity and style and bring full compliance to current codes for accessibility and energy. The renovation included several strategies to maximize sustainability: repurposing existing finishes and furnishings, selecting materials which met or exceeded CAL Green requirements for low emissions and low water usage, and replacing outdated lighting systems with state-of-the-art, energy efficient solutions. The construction demolition plan worked with a permitted transporter and registered recycling facility with demonstrated recovery standards of 65%.
Concept design for this renovation celebrates the entrepreneur. The Wharf itself has always been a place for the self-made, the entrepreneur, the independent. It is a down-to-earth atmosphere that bustles with the rhythm and energy of the marketplace. It is a community, it is a city center, it is an iconic port where travelers arrived historically by train or boat.
Using the Ferry Building Farmers Market as our beacon and our muse, the interior concept captures the style, energy and local flair through a blend of traditional accents, crafted details, artisan features and earthy tones. Features include custom lighting, metal work and unique art installations by all local artisans such as the 10-foot hanging ceramic mobile and custom cast insert at the fireplaces depicting the souvenirs of the wharf.
A significant challenge was balancing the preservation of the building's historic character while meeting modern accessibility and energy codes, requiring creative solutions that honored the original architecture while enhancing functionality for today's guests.
The key sustainability strategy was a complete overhaul of the outdated lighting systems. We carefully assessed the existing system for fixtures that could be reused or retrofitted. Alterations to the existing system incorporated all new energy efficient LED lighting, added occupancy sensors and shut off controls to all ballroom, meeting & conference spaces as well as updated Lutron controls throughout. The renovation exceeded the current standards and significantly reduced the energy usage. Our aim was to not exceed the allowed total wattage per CA Building Energy Efficiency Standards of 6,807.1 watts. Post renovation our total usage came in at 2,205.5 watts—approximately one- third the allowed wattage. Not only did we not exceed the CAL Green standards and CA Energy Code limits, but the end result provided better quality light, variable scene setting and occupancy sensors in all spaces for automatic shut-off when not in use.
